I'm aware there's a bus but only every second day and I think the day we're planning to arrive a Tuesday in early April will be an off day.. This road is now safe. You can go every time. Myanmar government take peace. And gun trouos are surrender. I just returned from Thaton last 2 days and the road was well maintained by the private company named Shwe Than Lwin and very good now.

The local of Thaton told us that the road is in same very good condition until Myawaddy. Does anyone know how easy it is to find transport from Myawaddy to Mawlamyine on arrival in Myawaddy? We plan to arrive on a Tuesday morning from Mae Sot. Have you found an answer. I need to go to Mawlamyine from Myawaddy by bus now. I had planned to fly from Mae Sot but all of a sudden the Malwamyine airport is closed until March.

Any updates? Hi, we travelled by car from Mae Sot to Mawlamyine in April this year - the road was fine and the trip was amazing. It was pretty easy negotiating a car in the main street of Myawaddy, where there were lots of cars for both private hire which is what we did or share taxi arrangements. The driving was at times hair-raising as it's a one-lane road with a steep drop off on one side a lot of the way through the mountains - but cars , trucks and buses are constantly overtaking each other anyway In terms of security, we went through various govt and Karen checkpoints and had no hassle.

We had to show our passports a few times but that wasn't so different from other travel around Burma. Getting to Mae Sot took longer than we expected as the buses from Sukhothai and Tak seemed to be all full and after gettign abus from Sukhothai to Tak, we had to wait several hours to get on an onward bus from Tak- but this may have been due to a recent fatal bus crash on the Tak -Mae Sot route, which led to the larger buses being taken off the road at that time.
Overall I'd recommend taking the Myawaddy - Mawlamyine road as it's a great introduction to Burma and earlier this year anyway was definitely off the tourist track. Definitely a safe road to Hpaan and Mawlamyine.
