The first fortifications built on the site were completed in the s, and were gradually enlarged over the centuries by the various clans who ruled over the region. The castle complex as it survives today is over years old and was completed in It is made up of over eighty buildings spread across multiple baileys, which are connected by a series of gates and winding paths.
Most visitors to Himeji Castle enter the castle via the Otemon Gate into the admission-free third bailey Sannomaru. The Sannomaru contains of a large, cherry tree lined lawn, and is a popular spot for taking photos of the castle and for viewing cherry blossoms. A ticket booth can be found at the far end of the bailey, where the Hishi Gate marks the entrance to the paid area.
The labyrinth-like approach from the Hishi Gate to the main keep leads along walled paths and through multiple gates and baileys with the purpose to slow down and expose attacking forces. At the heart of the complex stands the main keep, a six story wooden structure.
Getting There
It is one of only a handful castle keeps in Japan that feature wing buildings, adding complexity to its appearance. Visitors enter the main keep through an entrance in the lower floor of the building and climb upwards via a series of steep, narrow staircases. Each level gets progressively smaller as you ascend. Himeji Castle is one of the most spectacular in Japan and has been used as a setting for many films.
The volunteer guides are very knowledgeable and enhance the tour of the castle with video clips of film scenes shot in certain locations. Numerous beautiful experiences within a short bus trip from central city and, without doubt, the finest castle in all Japan. Try the eye-level hinoki tub bath in the Egret Centre followed by a meal at the restaurant in the same building. Shoshazan via the ropeway was brilliant. Tegarayama and nearby Nagoyama were both impressive features. Shopping in Miyukidori Arcade and others nearby offers all you could find in the bigger cities elsewhere: clean, beautiful and a delight.
The castle was very nice, mostly my discomfort is with the Tourist information center. As they told me everything was open, and it wasnt due to Corona Virus understandable, but I wished I had been warned when I specificallyasked about it ; then they recommended Ie Islands and IT. NOT a place meant for tourism. Still interesting in a "of the beaten path" kind of way, but not a place I would have wanted to spend my Sunday. List your property.

It is centred on the Tenshu-gun, a complex made up of the donjon, keeps and connecting structures that are part of a highly developed system of defence and ingenious protection devices dating from the beginning of the Shogun period. The castle functioned continuously as the centre of a feudal domain for almost three centuries, until when the Shogun fell and a new national government was created. Criterion i : Himeji-jo is a masterpiece of construction in wood. It combines its effective functional role with great aesthetic appeal, both in the use of white-painted plaster and in the subtlety of the relationships between the building masses and the multiple roof layers.
Criterion iv : It represents the culmination of Japanese castle architecture in wood, and preserves all its significant features intact.
Availability
The property, a single entity zone of ha, is almost coincident with the overall castle grounds, which are divided into the inner walled zone and the outer walled zone. The property boundaries follow the moats around the outer walled zone, except in the southeast. In the property zone, the eighty-two buildings that include the donjon complex, ramparts, gates, and stone walls have fully retained their original composition and condition dating back to the early 17th century, although some of the buildings of Himeji-jo were lost in the process of historical change.
The feudal masters of the castle kept it in good order with regular repair campaigns in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. There has been some loss of buildings over time. After the national government took over the site, part of the west bailey and samurai houses were replaced by military buildings.
