The tradition of confessing serves as a stage where couples can make it clear that they are exclusively dating from the outset. This is purely from the perspective of a woman in her twenties herself, but around the time people graduate and enter the workforce, they tend to start thinking that they'd prefer their next relationship to be a long term one that could lead to marriage.
