Too many cars, too many mopeds, too much noise, not as clean as other Chinese cities I visited, not as well maintained. I did manage to find a few nice restaurants with good food and people. There are a few good places to get excellent pastry. For a big city as Urumqi is, there was really not that much to it. Just a wonderful place to relax and escape the Summer heat. The only thing there to see unless you have enough time for whole day trips, is the ethnic nationalities museum which has a wonderful collection of very well preserved mummies.
The famed great bazaar was being renovated so only a few shops open and be aware you need an app on your phone to do many of the purchases We walked to the red hill and climbed to the pagoda , it's a 30 min walk and we were lucky a friendly Chinese man showed us the way and more or less lead us there.
