Other temporary military restricted zones have been established in eastern provinces. There may be some disruption to travel in these areas. On 17 August an attack in central Van against a police station killed 3 people and injured 73 others. On 4 September , a mortar attack was launched against a police checkpoint in the Edremit district of Van Province, but there were no injuries.
On 12 September an attack at a police checkpoint wounded at least 50 people in Van province. There have been subsequent clashes between Turkish security forces and the PKK resulting in a number of deaths and injuries.

However it has many hidden gems. There are beautifully restored Hans, mosques, and interesting alleyways to explore. The Kurdish cuisine is absolutely delicious! Do not miss the opportunity to climb up to the ancient ramparts of the city and survey the scene. An unforgettable view of the Tigris awaits you! A nice city , with friendly people and a vibrant atmosphete. The Turkish government are rebuilding the old city, which will look great!
Diyarbakir is now as safe as houses and has great food and some amazing monuments and sights. It's a bit depressing in the centre. Years of conflict has left Diyarbakir damaged and it's people poor. Historically I would say it's wonderful but I didn't have time to explore. The food from street vendors was excellent. As a lone female traveller I didn't find anywhere in the city centre where I could go and drink coffee or even sit down so I left early for this one reason. If you want visitors you need a cafe culture I think.
Hotel Kaya has an excallent location, everything worth sighseeing is in a walking distance. The room although simple was extremely clean! Location is really good too. Located just minutes from the old town wall this modern friendly hotel is excellent.
